Weave Only A Trace Exhibition

I’m delighted to share that I’m going to be part of the Weave Only A Trace exhibition this Autumn.

I'm one of eleven Shropshire-based artist-makers who will be part of the exhibition on basketry, wood and natural fibres. It will be held at the Footprint Art Gallery in the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site from 8-18 November 2024.

This exhibition has been inspired by an increasing awareness of the impact of human activity on the world’s resources and biodiversity. It seeks to offer an alternative vision of creativity as a sustainable and imaginative process. It aims to create dialogue between artist and viewer - to increase awareness of the creative potential of nature itself.

Several of us are involved in researching and rediscovering heritage techniques and endangered baskets, as recognised by the Heritage Crafts Association. The exhibition will showcase how designer-makers are harnessing and re-imagining historic designs to invigorate the contemporary market, and will seek to share with and inspire a wider audience concerning our shared living heritage - as promoted by the UNESCO Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The exhibition has been curated by the artists themselves and features a mix of emerging and established artists: Daisy Askins, Lesley Butler, Alisha Davidson, Ruth Denison, Phi Evans, Sophie Francis, Julie Harrison, David Horton, Mary Lewis, Clare Revera, and Steph Shaw.

As part of the exhibition, we have curated a programme of experiential learning to facilitate creative engagement with natural materials and processes. Daily demonstrations by our exhibiting artists will give visitors the chance to watch basketry in action, and learn more about the different tools and techniques involved in some of the pieces exhibited. We'll also be running a series of introductory workshops for those who want to learn something new and create their own pieces inspired by the exhibition.

With thanks to our funders - the Basketmakers Association and the Worshipful Company of Basketmakers.
